We recently had the privilege to be invited to attend the Frontiers in STEM event at the Houses of Parliament alongside my peer from Challoner’s. This eye-opening event, organized by Lord Sewell and hosted by Professor Gregory N. Polleta, was an incredible opportunity to engage with leading experts across various STEM fields. The day was filled with thought-provoking discussions and inspiring insights. We explored a diverse range of case studies, from applying computational thinking to natural selection to innovative Tokamak alternatives in the US Fusion Program. These discussions challenged us to think critically about the decision-making processes behind research and deepened our understanding of complex scientific advancements. The event also featured incredible speakers, each offering a unique perspective on cutting-edge research and innovation:

• An Autodesk MLE & AI specialist sharing insights on his journey and work

• A UK Ministry Of Defence Researcher part of the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) diving into his experience with cryogenic engineering and nuclear fusion.

• A Honda R&D AI & Quantum Engineer exploring the future of AI and quantum systems.

• A Louis Vuitton biomaterials engineer highlighting the fascinating links between fashion and scientific research.

• A University of Warwick PhD Fluid Dynamics Student discussing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and his research

A special mention to Professor Gregory N. Polletta, who hosted the event with incredible energy. With experiences ranging from R&D projects to being part of the original team that developed PayPal, as well as teaching his courses at Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) , his insights into innovation and problem-solving were truly inspiring.

I’m incredibly grateful for this experience as it gave me a deeper appreciation for the vast opportunities within STEM and invaluable advice that I will carry forward in my own journey.
