On Friday this week, Junior Prize Giving was held in the Main Hall to celebrate achievements and contributions to school life in the 2014-15 academic year. Dr Fenton summarised the main events of the year in his Headmaster's Report and introduced guest speaker, and Old Challoner, Tom Keeling who gave an excellent address to the assembled students and parents.
As a graphic designer, now working as Head of Design for Manchester United, Tom began by asking humourously for all the Arsenal fans to quietly leave! He delivered an inspirational speech on the subject of standing out from the crowd and making the most of every opportunity, which during his time at Challoner's even included ballroom dancing! Tom handed prizes to students from Year 7 to Year 10 for academic excellence, commitment to learning and contribution to school music, sport, drama, Student Voice, work-related learning and community service.
Between prizes, Dr Fenton invited a number of student contributors to describe some of their experiences over the year. These ranged from working for the Student Journalism Team through to educational visits to Cologne and Bletchley Park, sports tours to Grenada (complete with goats on pitches and the occasional volcanic eruption!) and taking part in Swing Band. There were splendid performances featuring classical guitar and a performed extract from last year's summer play, Hidden.
Junior Prize Giving was an enjoyable and stimulating event to attend, recognising the hard work of students and staff, in Dr Fenton's last year at Dr Challoner's.
