This week, new and excited Year 12s went on their first Culture Club visit to the one and only Royal Festival Hall on the South Bank, to experience the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Jakub Hrůša, perform Dvorák's Symphony No. 7 and Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2. But before the musical highlights we were warmed up with Smetana's Overture, a short but exciting piece. After this, Bartered Bride (also by Smetana) was performed, which tells a story - as you can guess - of a bartered bride, taking us through the motions, both invigorating and somber.
Finally, we had Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2, performed by the renowned Daniil Trifonov, with his enthusiastic head movements adding to the spectacular and extremely popular piece. After a short interval, Dvorák's Symphony No. 7 was a dramatic and beautifully constructed piece, a great way to finish a fantastic evening, and the visit overall a brilliant introduction to culture club.
