This week four students from Years 11 to 13 travelled to John Colet School in Wendover to take part in the regional competition of the annual Senior Team Maths Challenge. They travelled in high hopes having won the competition the year before, and hoping to keep up the performance despite the strong competition from twenty other local schools.

The competition started with a group round which challenged the teams to work together to complete 10 problems of varying difficulties and from different areas of mathematics within a 40 minute time limit. Following this, the teams split into pairs and required strong communication skills to complete a maths-based crossword within a similarly tight time constraint. The competitors then had a chance to eat after all their hard work, meet other teams and find out the current standings. By this time the Challoner's team were tied at the top of the table with only one round remaining to single out a winner.

Refueled and full of determination to finish as strongly as they had started, the third ‘shuttle’ round began. This final task rewarded the teams for completing problems quickly as well as accurately with a much tighter eight minute deadline on each of the four sections in the round. At the end of the event, the exhausted team were delighted to hear that all their work had paid off and they were crowned overall victors having not dropped a single mark throughout the competition! They are now preparing for the national finals which will be held in London next year.
