The latest theatrical venture to come out of Dr Challoner's High School is The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht. Following on from the exciting Blood Wedding performed at DCHS earlier in the year, this performance saw students in Years 9 to 12 from both schools come together, led by Mr Lewis and Mrs Dunn of the DCHS Drama Team.

The Caucasian Chalk Circle is set in the Caucasus mountains in Russia and tells the story of a young kitchenmaid, Grusha, played by Eloise Molloy, who becomes engaged to Simon Chachava, played by Sullivan Burnside. Out of kindness she takes in the child of a noble family that would otherwise have been neglected. She runs away from the fallen city across the mountains to escape from the ironshirts and soldiers who plan to take the child for money. During her journey to the mountains she comes across many old peasants and rich ladies who hinder her from her travels.

The soldiers end up taking the child and rely on the village clerk turned judge, Azdak, played by Lucy Carver, to decide whether the child should be given to a loving mother or the corrupt noble family: and so commences the famous test of the ‘Chalk Circle’.

Audience numbers were up from last year and we had fantastic feedback from those who came to see the production, which included the familiar faces of Mr Millar and Mr Walter. On the last night we were overcrowded, with 150 audience members!

Thanks to Mr Lewis and Mrs Dunn for putting this together and we hope for another amazing performance to follow next year.
