Recently, Year 8 had the exciting opportunity to listen to the best selling American author, Michael Grant, in the Milton Library. He gave us a very interesting insight into the life of a successful author and spoke to us about the good times and the bad times that he has experienced. Michael was extremely relaxed, casual and friendly throughout the entire talk and he managed to make some excellent jokes too!
The main topic of the talk was his new book, Silver Stars, which is set in the Second World War. The book is, interestingly, set in a world where women would have been able to join the American army. Since he wrote about the Second World War, we were able to find out about his experiences researching the subject. One of the highlights of this part of the talk was the video clip of him shooting weapons from that era. He decided to test these weapons so that he knew what it felt like to pull the trigger and experience the sound of the gunshots, allowing him to describe accurate and vivid scenes in his book. At the end of the talk, we were grateful that we were able to ask Michael questions.
A notable question was whether he had any ideas for future books and he said he was working on a prequel to his much loved Gone book series which has been read and thoroughly enjoyed by most of us. I am certain that Year 8 are extremely grateful to have had the chance of meeting such an established author, and we hope he writes more great books for us to read and revel in.
