On Wednesday, the jazz bands of DCGS and RGS joined forces in the school hall for a musical workshop, led by Pete Long, the director of the Ronnie Scott Big Band. To start off the session, Pete took the students through the key parts of playing in a big band in order to get the feel of the music right. After learning the basics, the bands each performed one of their pieces before Pete made suggestions, taught and helped them to improve.
Afterwards, parents were invited to hear the two ensembles play in a ‘Battle of the Bands’ style performance. Starting with Challoner’s, each band showcased the piece worked on in the session before. The evening culminated with a joint piece called ‘Doxy,’ featuring an epic ‘drum-off’ between the two percussionists.
After a fantastic event, thanks must go to Mr Tansley and the Head of Music at RGS for organising it.
