Writing: George Corby (Year 11)
This Wednesday, students, staff and friends of the broader Challoner’s community gathered for the annual Christmas carol service at St Mary’s Church, Old Amersham.
The event is possibly the best and most highly acclaimed event of the musical school calendar. This year, the choir was glad to be joined by female singers from our newly co-educational Sixth Form.
The service was started impeccably by Julius Kiln, who sang the Once in Royal David's City first verse solo. The main choir went on to sing Gaudete, well-loved by Challoner's students, and many other carols such as Personent Hodie, the Sans Day Carol and Resonemus Laudibus.
However, this year's service had an interesting addition, with both the newly-formed Sixth Form Girls Choir and Chamber Choir performing. The Sixth Form Girls Choir sung Candlelight Carol by Rutter while the Chamber Choir, directed by Zach Yarrow in Year 12, sung In the Bleak Midwinter by Holst. It was a welcome addition to the service, offering a wonderful new dimension to the range of music performed.
Once again, it was an evening of outstanding talent and on behalf of all the choir, I’d like to thank Mr Tansley and Mrs Gee for their tremendous work in preparing this service.
