Rights Respecting Schools is a national programme being piloted in Amersham schools in partnership with UNICEF. DCGS is one of only ten schools in the whole of Bucks to be given this opportunity. The purpose of this is to raise awareness of the International Convention on the Rights of Children Treaty which was signed 20 years ago and ratified in 1991, yet has not impacted upon public awareness.
The Global Issues Student Group, strengthened by some additional volunteers, attended a training session by UNICEF on Thursday 10th December. The training involved a wide range of activities, from learning about the UN convention on the rights of the child, to tasks with a global perspective. They started brainstorming ideas for raising awareness within the school community and what this could mean to DCGS.
Miss Binnion, Miss Massey and Mr Keen were impressed by the students’ mature and collaborative approach to the workshop. The visitors commented on the exemplary attitude, enthusiasm and imagination of the students who certainly came up with some exciting plans to launch their campaign. We are sure that this is the start of big things to come.
